ACCOUNTING CAREER AWARENESS PROGRAM (ACAP)

The primary objective of ACAP is to increase the understanding of accounting and business career opportunities among high school students from underrepresented ethnic groups. Through ACAP's efforts, students have received educational enrichment experiences and practical help needed for college preparation and a career in accounting.

ACAP began in 1980 when the National Association of Black Accountants recognized the need for a program that would direct African-Americans and other minorities towards the accounting profession. Recognizing that preparation for a professional career begins in junior and senior high school, NABA designed a pilot program that would be informative, yet go beyond words. Accordingly, the one-week residency concept was developed.

During the week, students will have the opportunity to attend classes on careers in accounting and business, personal development and college preparation; tour college campuses, local companies, and CPA firms; and invite their parent(s) or guardian(s) to a banquet in commemoration of their completion of the program.

ACAP will celebrate its 15th year on the University of Texas at Austin campus. Approximately 40 students are chosen to attend. Students will participate in fun team building and evening activities (bowling, laser tag etc), workshops about communication skills, etiquette, and career development as well as focused business sessions taught by UT faculty and industry professionals. Students also work on a group project with a cohort.

ACAP is a week long on campus institute for economically disadvantaged students, or for those who will be the first members of their families to attend college. However, all students are welcome to apply.

What is Accounting anyway?

(adapted from Robert half International, Inc. http://www.nextgenaccountant.com )

You can be a(n):

  • Chief Financial Officer - Heard of a CEO? Be a CFO! Run the company from the financial standpoint.
  • Environmental Accountant - address the issue of how companies can be both profitable and environmental.
  • Forensic Accountant - identify and track fraud.
  • E-Commerce Strategist - become knowledgeable of internet regulations and market e-commerce initiatives.
  • Personal Financial Planner - help clients reduce debt and control expenses to reduce debt.
  • Internal Consultant - define what a company needs to grow their business. Stars in the entertainment industry need someone to manage their accounts. Large and small companies need accountants.The majority of accountants do not perform “typical” accounting functions, as in the past, or what people may perceive. Most work with technology, management consulting, and personal financial services.

To be an Accountant you must be:
Technologically savvy, able to strategically plan and make decisions, work with many types of people, possess communication and analytical skills, have a background in all aspects of business (finance, marketing, management information systems, management and more).

What do I need to apply?
A GPA of at least 3.2, resume, two letters of recommendation, high school transcript, and a completed McCombs High School Summer Programs application.
